Leica Dresses Its PRS 5-30x56i in Limited-Edition FDE Finish

Leica has expanded its long-range riflescope range with the limited-edition PRS 5-30x56i FDE Edition. Instead of the standard black exterior, the new version uses a Flat Dark Earth finish and comes with accessories in the same colour. Its underlying design remains the established PRS format, with no new magnification range or second-generation optical system introduced.

For those familiar with the Leica PRS 5-30×56 review, the main change is the appearance and the equipment supplied with the scope. This is an additional version of the PRS rather than a replacement for the existing range.

The FDE treatment covers more than the scope tube. Leica includes matching FDE Tenebraex flip caps and a sunshade, while white markings provide contrast against the brown exterior. The package also contains a throw lever, a tool, a battery and cleaning material. Because the caps and sunshade are visually prominent, matching them to the scope creates a more unified finish.

Leica is presenting the riflescope alongside its new Geovid Max 10×42 binoculars as part of a coordinated FDE offering. The scope carries product number 51301, and Leica identifies its reticle as the illuminated L-PRB. The other reticle choices available elsewhere in the broader PRS family should not be treated as alternative configurations for this limited-edition model.

The principal specifications remain those associated with the existing PRS. The scope provides 5-30x magnification, uses a 56mm objective and has a 34mm main tube. Its reticle is positioned in the first focal plane, while elevation travel is listed at 32 MILs. Leica gives the overall length as 365mm and the weight as 1,030g.

Those measurements put the FDE Edition firmly in the full-size precision-optics class. Changing the finish has not made the PRS a compact or lightweight scope, so it does not offer a substantially different physical format for buyers seeking one.

The specification also retains a multi-turn elevation turret, tool-free turret-scale zeroing and an adjustable zero stop. These functions should be distinguished from the included zero-stop adjustment tool: although the turret scale can be zeroed without tools, the complete system is not tool-free because Leica supplies an onboard tool for adjusting the zero stop.

Leica quotes light transmission of more than 90 per cent and lists AquaDura lens coating, nitrogen filling and waterproofing to four metres. Those are manufacturer specifications, and the launch announcement does not establish any new optical advantage over the black PRS.

The original PRS was introduced in 2020 with the same defining combination of a 6x zoom range, a first-focal-plane reticle and a 34mm tube. The FDE Edition preserves that identity. For existing owners, the launch therefore represents a different presentation of a known model rather than an indication that their current scope has been superseded.

Leica’s US listing gives the PRS FDE Edition a price of US$3,399. This is US-market pricing and is not an Australian retail quote. Leica calls the model a limited edition, but its launch material does not specify how many units will be produced.

The new version gives existing PRS enthusiasts a factory Flat Dark Earth option with coordinated accessories, while owners who prefer the black model lose nothing as a result. The release broadens the available choice without representing it as a technical revolution.
